Classroom Management
I believe in a classroom where every student feels physically and emotionally safe. I want students to feel like they are able to say anything that comes to mind, make mistakes, and learn and grow together. The school and I work very hard to make sure that the students are physically safe, but it is up to our class to make our room emotionally safe. In order to maintain an emotionally safe classroom, we have to create a positive classroom climate where the students respect each other and themselves. This stems from having set rules and consequences and following them as closely as possible. Since rules can seem a little daunting to students (especially the young ones) we also focus a lot on positive things that are happening in the classroom. This is where our school wide behaviors, the clip chart, and class dojo becomes very handy.
The following rules and consequences are enforced for the clip chart and class dojo:
School Rules:
South Kearns Top Cats are:
Safe
Respectful
Responsible
Consequences:
-A student is given one verbal warning
-If a behavior continues after a verbal warning, a student's magnet will be moved down to yellow.
-If the behavior continues the student will be moved down to orange.
-If the behavior continues after that the student will visit the office and parents will be contacted. A white slip may be issued.
